Former Romney-endorser Santorum poised to hand Romney victory. Irony abounds.

Hardest hit: The Other McCain.

Funny how this seems to be shaking down, isn’t it? Roger Simon points out “Mitt don’t need no surge”  because he has witless Santorum backers to hand him a victory:

If Mitt Romney wins the Iowa caucuses, the race for the Republican nomination is over.

If Mitt Romney comes in second in Iowa, the race for the Republican nomination is over.

And if Mitt Romney comes in third in Iowa, the race for the Republican nomination is over.

Why? Is his message of goodness and decency and American exceptionalism so overwhelmingly persuasive or are his personal attributes so awesomely compelling?

No. It’s because the Iowa caucuses do not pick winners as much as they eliminate losers. And the Iowa caucuses Tuesday are likely to eliminate from serious contention the only two men who might have blocked Romney’s path to victory: Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry.

With those two out of the way, Romney faces Ron Paul, who could come in first, second or third here on Tuesday or Rick Santorum, who could do the same.

But neither of those men has a credible route to the nomination no matter how well they do in Iowa.

How’s that for depressing on January 2nd?

Professor Jacobson adds:

Dear Iowa: You are being played like a fiddle.

It’s hard to figure why folks would back the latest non-Romney when he endorsed Romney the last go-round. But heck, he endorsed Arlen Specter, too, so it’s not like folks look deep, is it?

Is Santorum working a Bachmann trying to cozy up as VP? I’m sure he can help win Pennsylvania after his 20-point blowout loss to a liberal. Just like Mitt can deliver his home state. Yeah right.

  1. One wonders why the “Perry isn’t a contender” meme has such traction, doesn’t one? Washington’s “mobius strip” is going to great, great lengths to try to pretend Perry isn’t the candidate who will face Obama down in November. But he will be. Because the only polls that matter are on voting day, and Iowa’s primary does not determine our candidate – especially when that candidate is a Texan! 😉

Happy new year! May 2012 be a blessed one for you and your family! 🙂

  2. Well Alan Colmes went a long way in getting Santorum some votes tomorrow with his wildly insensitive comments about the death of his baby.
